I think people are put off by the fact that I’m Catholic. And I dare not tell them that the only reason I like the religion is because I am gripped in an unholy awe of its violent tradition which is so steeped in blood, sex, and sacrifice in adherance to the rule of a vengeful God that I can’t believe the Old Testament hasn’t been given a literary equivalent of an NC-17 rating by the “proper” authorities.

I’m dimly aware that there is an essential message of peace, love, and brotherhood embedded somewhere in the readings or the homily but I go to Mass only to gawk at the glittering elaborateness of the age-old rituals that can pacify even His most fearful of wraths, indulge in the sanctified murder of His only begotten Son, and in the cannibalistic (albeit symbolic) partaking of the Body and Blood of the Christ Jesus who dies over and over and over again.

Gustatory DissonanceCulinary notes from 7th of September 2008

Made spinach brulée for supper tonight. It was somehow edible, if a bit runny. With this jiggly, pudding-like consistency, my tastebuds naturally anticipated something sweet so the savouriness perplexed me every time I managed to get a mouthful in. Let me tell you… being perplexed when you eat does not really make for a pleasant dining experience. This stuff goes quite well with the bacon, though. But that’s not saying much since bacon goes with everything!

Not sure I like savoury brulées. Maybe I should attempt vegetable soufflés next time.

Orange AmbrosiaCulinary notes from 11th of September...

Orange Ambrosia
Culinary notes from 11th of September 2008

Lessons learned: a) Just chop onion into little pieces, not puree it into oblivion, b) Don’t boil squash too long AND then puree it into oblivion, c) No lemon juice needed, and d) It does not matter what kind of broth cubes are used.

This has been a week of culinary experiments. Is my inner Martha finally emerging? Took over the kitchen again evening before last and cooked Cream of Squash Soup. Topped with bacon again, of course; I am of the belief that bacon makes everything better. I’m happy to report that despite the over-dilution (see Lesson B) and strong oniony and lemony flavors (refer to Lessons A and C) which lend a sharply sour tone to the soup, it’s very, very delicious. I used one and a half pounds of squash for this and still have quite a ton left so I’ll probably make a hopefully improved version before it all goes bad.

Yellow flowers with a vintagey feel.

Yellow flowers with a vintagey feel.

Orchids with stripey purple tongues.

Orchids with stripey purple tongues.

Starry night at a retail center along Orchard Road.

Starry night at a retail center along Orchard Road.

Close-up of interesting-looking ‘shroom.

Close-up of interesting-looking ‘shroom.

Red public telephone at a Singapore subway terminal.

Red public telephone at a Singapore subway terminal.

Pink dotty flowers.
